THREE FORTY ONE FAQs

What prompted the writing of this show?

Three things. Firstly, in 2018 I saw a really moving documentary about Kiribati and how rising seas and extreme weather are making it increasingly unliveable. What really got me was hearing the locals answer the question: ‘How do you feel about this, given that it’s a problem you didn’t cause?’ Secondly, it was quite something seeing Tuvalu’s foreign minister deliver a speech to the UN standing in a suit – in the sea! It went viral on YouTube. He was standing in a place that used to be dry land at the time of World War 2. What better way to make the point that the seas are threatening his country? It felt to me that his action demanded a response – and not just from the UN. Thirdly, there’s an extraordinary quote that captures the rationale for this show better than any other. It’s from Gus Speth, US environmental lawyer and advocate:

I used to think the top global environmental problems were biodiversity loss, ecosystem collapse and climate change. I thought that with 30 years of good science we could address these problems. But I was wrong. The top environmental problems are selfishness, greed and apathy, and to deal with these we need a spiritual and cultural transformation, and we scientists don’t know how to do that.

It seemed like Gus was calling out to community leaders, artists and communicators, saying ‘We scientists need your help’. This show is our response.

Why’s it called THREE FORTY ONE?

Unfortunately you have to come to the show to find out! But what we can say is that around scene three, a character comes on stage wearing a shirt that says, ‘3.41’ – and this has everyone guessing what it means. What do you think?!

Where will season two of THREE FORTY ONE be staged?

We are seeking funding to bring THREE FORTY ONE to a major central Auckland theatre.

If I wanted to give Toitoi Collective Theatre a donation to help bring season two to the stage, how would I do that?

That would be so appreciated! Finding grants to create and produce quality shows on these important topics has been extraordinarily difficult. Our bank details are: Toitoi Collective Charitable Trust. TSB Account: 15-3968-0108586-01. Or you can email us at: toitoicollectivetheatre@gmail.com

How can I contact Toitoi Collective Theatre?

The easiest is to email us at toitoicollectivetheatre@gmail.com. We check this email regularly. Or you could send Steve Worsley a message on Facebook Messenger.
