SEASON TWO AUDITIONS: Sat 18 April, 2026 / (Show Performances: October 6-18)

Received with standing ovations and described as ‘Funny, Insightful and Urgent’ by NZ Herald writer Simon Wilson, Toitoi Collective is excited to announce that auditions are now open for Season Two of, ‘THREE FORTY ONE – The Climate Musical’!

Welcome to the resort! On an island like the islands of Tuvalu, a kiwi wedding party arrive for the time of their lives, unaware that life altering realities await them. With a compelling script and songs that range from hilarious to heart breaking, THREE FORTY ONE addresses the climate crisis, considering it through the eyes of those most affected. This show is dedicated to the people of the world’s many coastal regions being increasingly affected by extreme weather and sea level rise. Theirs is a story that needs hearing and responding to, before it’s too late.

Music, lyrics and script for Three Forty One were composed by show writer and former concert pianist, Steve Worsley.  Steve expresses his appreciation for the significant advice and insights from the Auckland and Warkworth Kiribati and Tuvalu communities, and for those who spent countless hours advising on the script, the characters, the songs, and the science. There are 20 songs, scored with guitars, ukeleles, wood percussion, keys, bass, drums and natural sounds. For an idea of the musical styles in the show, click on the song samples in the Character Descriptions / Audios section below. Similar to The Way of The Raukura, Three Forty One is not sung throughout; there is drama, dancing and singing – sometimes separately, sometimes together.

Synopsis

A New Zealand wedding party arrive at a Pacific island for the time of their lives, a few days ahead of the wedding.  They are unaware that locals have been leaving the island in recent years due to increasingly extreme weather and sea level rise.  Everything changes at the end of act one, and in act two the guests depend on the islanders to stay alive.  ‘Paradise’ one moment and ‘Survivor’ the next, this show has the colour, magic and fun of the Pacific, while also bringing into clear focus the pivotal global issue of our day.

Characters Descriptions / Audios

Click on any of the names below to find out about that character, and to hear parts of the songs he/she sings.

Leilani

Educated in the West, Leilani has returned to the island she grew up on. She is a passionate character who has lived in two worlds and constantly challenges the presumptions of the other characters. This is a key lead role which requires lots of acting and a number of solo songs. Needs a big, expressive voice with a good range. Age range: 19-35.

Tani

Leilani’s brother, Tani is a fisherman, and a bit of a showman. He loves island life, and contrary to Leilani, he never gets too stressed. The tragedy of Act 2 however, brings out a deeper side to Tani, as per the song, ‘The Cry of Your Children’. Tani appears in lots of scenes, has two solo songs and solo lines in other songs also. Preferably tenor, but baritone is possible. (An advantage if you can tap a rhythm with sticks and sing at the same time!) Age range: 17-35.

Salanga

Manager of the resort, Salanga represents typical values of the islands – hospitality, community, graciousness, and faith in God. However, she struggles to control Leilani. This is a lead role with plenty of acting, some solo singing and some harmony singing. An alto or mezzo voice would work for this role. Age range: 35-60

Teiro

A staff worker at the resort. She and her son Teiki have a Kiribati background – the island they came from had become compromised by extreme weather and sea level rise. Teiro looks up to Leilani, and hopes one day to experience the West like Leilani did, and make better opportunities for herself and Teiki. Teiro sings lead in the song, ‘Home’ and has various other vocal solo spots.  Age range: 17-40

Aaron

An Aid Worker, Aaron is on a short term assignment on this island, hopeful of regaining the attention of Leilani while he is there. Solo singing, and lots of acting. Age range: 25-45

Evelyn

Fascinated by science and nature, and knows lots of facts about climate and sea level rise. Gets stressed and uncomfortable when change happens. Her parents (Will & Sofie) help her through. Needs a good actor as this character appears to be ‘on the spectrum’. Also needs to be a good expressive singer, with a good range. Age range: 18-40

Will & Sofie

A couple who holiday at this island every year with their ‘on the spectrum’ daughter, Evelyn. They love nature, and know the locals, their customs and culture well. They are a musical couple, writing and singing novelty songs to distract Evelyn in times of stress. Needs singers who can sing with character and humour, and can sing/talk with different accents. Age-range: 50-70

Chloe

The Bride to be. She and fiance Liam are wealthy but also generous. They paid for the wedding party’s trip to the island where the wedding will be held in a few days’ time. Chloe is a highly strung, A type, high achiever. She appears in lots of scenes, has two significant solo songs, one of which requires a reasonable range. Age range: 20-40

Indy

A bridesmaid and friend of Chloe’s from university days. Indie seems to be interested in little more than good times and sun tan – until her story opens up. Indie has one important solo song which requires a reasonable range, and various other solo moments. Age range: 20-45

Nate

Groomsman Nate used to hang out with the Groom (Liam) but hasn’t seen him much in the last decade. Fond of a beer or two. Speaks his mind and doesn’t care too much what others think. Constantly winds up the locals with his limited worldview, but is not without humour. Solo singing and lots of acting. Baritone or Tenor range.
Age range: 20-45

Olly

Best Man and lover of the outdoors, Olly knows the Groom (Liam) well, but Liam has been increasingly busy with work as the years have gone by. Reasonable and thoughtful, he counter balances the brashness of Nate. Baritone or tenor range. Age range: 20-45

Trish

Bridesmaid Trish is a friend of Chloe’s from university. She is pregnant as the show begins. She’s practical and keeps her feet on the ground. She’s also pretty blunt, and doesn’t suffer fools. The father of her child is never mentioned. Alto or mezzo range. Age range: 18-40

Teiro

Bridesmaid Trish is a friend of Chloe’s from university. She is pregnant – about half way through her term when the show begins. She’s practical and keeps her fett on the ground. She’s also pretty blunt, and doesn’t suffer fools. Been involved with various blokes, but never stayed long with any of them. The father of her child is never mentioned. Some solo singing and lots of acting. More harmony singing
than solo singing. Alto or mezzo range. Age range: 18-40

Kamo

Kamo is a fisherman and companion of Tani’s. Likes to lighten the mood with his self-styled ‘magic’ tricks, making things appear and disappear! Has a Kiribati background. A significant song for Kamo is the traditional Kiribati ‘Frigate Song’ which starts the show. Age range: 17-35

Teiki

Around 10 years old, son of Teiro. Often looked after at the resort by Meleala & Lotonau. Looks up to Kamo and Olly. Needs to be confident on stage, able to act and remember a couple of lines. Age range 8-12.

Meleala & Lotonau

A husband & wife couple. They are often looking after Teiki so that Teiro can do her resort work. Mele chases Kele with a jandal when he plays up or is lazy! Age range 55-75

Keleti, Karalo, Masina & Elisala

Resort workers who add fun and a taste of PI cuture in the background throughout the story. Kele & Karalo play up a bit and get in trouble. Kele’s sister is Masina; Karalo’s sister is Elisala. Masina and Elisala pretend to be impressed by Kamo’s magic tricks, and also pay plenty of attention to Teiki.
